First Annual

Lyme Away 5K to Spotlight Lyme Disease

On October 23, 2016, the first annual Lyme Away 5K Run/Walk will be held at the Luther Forest Athletic Fields, 30 Rocket Way, Malta, NY, at 9:30 am.  Sponsored by the Spa City Running Club, the regional event will raise awareness about Lyme and other tick-borne diseases common in our area. Proceeds from the event will help to support the Lyme Action Network’s education and awareness programs and the Spa City Running Club’s track & field and cross country youth programs.

With over 330,000 new cases of Lyme disease occurring in the US each year, every family needs to be well informed about prevention, diagnosis, and treatment options in the event of a tick bite. Lyme disease has reached epidemic proportions in our region, so being informed and alert is critical.  With the funds raised from this event, the Lyme Action Network will publish the second edition of Learn the Facts, a comprehensive informational flyer distributed free throughout the region.

“The pairing of the Spa City Running Club and the Lyme Action Network is perfect”, said Lyme Action Network president, Christina Fisk.  “It is essential that we make every effort to keep our children out of harm’s way, encourage them to get involved in whatever athletic endeavors delight them, and join forces to be sure everyone is alert to the issues surrounding Lyme disease and the variety of co-infections that often accompany it. The Lyme Action Network is very grateful to be included in this event.”

Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate.  Volunteers are needed to assist with a variety of organizational tasks.  Families and friends are needed to cheer on the runners and walkers.  All are welcome.
