Integrative Medicine and the Treatment of Tick Borne Diseases

Our first guest speaker for the Fall 2012 season was Dr. Ronald Stram, a board-certified medical doctor and fellowship trained in Integrative Medicine. He is the founder of the Stram Center for Integrative Medicine in Delmar, NY. and Bennington, VT Dr. Stram founded the Stram Center, a collaboration of healing arts practitioners, to more actively incorporate preventative and pro-active care into his patients' wellness programs as a means to prevent illness and to reduce the debilitation associated with chronic disease. Dr. Stram's team includes physicians, primary care nurse practitioners, a naturopathic physician, acupuncturists, Chinese herbalists, medical massage therapists, and Reiki Master healers and teachers.
Dr. Alan MacDonald
Friday, Oct. 19
Dr. Alan MacDonald (the pathologist researching Lyme disease who was featured in Under Our Skin) was the guest speaker @ the Goodwill Church – 2135 Route 208, Montgomery, NY. Under Our Skin was shown as well.
For the past 30 years Dr. Alan MacDonald has worked to revive the Model of Syphilis and draw attention to clinical and laboratory parallels between Treponema pallidum infection and Lyme Borreliosis. Dr. MacDonald hypothesized that Alzheimer's disease might be the late neural borreliosis equivalent of General paresis of the insane. He further hypothesized that syphilitic Tabes Dorsalis might have a "spinal cord only" neurodegenerative equivalent in borreliosis, namely Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease). He hypothesized that syphilitic Temporal arteritis might have a Borrelia equivalent in Temporal arteritis of unknown cause. In addition to the ongoing Alzheimer's studies, which would occupy the remainder of his research career, Alan made basic new observations in pathobiology. He was the first to publish evidence for a cystic form of Bb, granular forms of Bb, and cell wall deficient forms. Although officially retired now, Dr. MacDonald has started a research collaboration with Dr. Eva Sapi of University of New Haven.

Under Our Skin
Full movie available on YouTube, Hulu, and Netflix Streaming.

This riveting film unfolds like a thriller, presenting a frightening expose about how our medical system is failing to address one of the most serious epidemics of our time. The public is invited to all showings. Previous regional screenings have been attended by standing-room-only crowds.
Students, educators, and parents are especially encouraged to join us as the tick population is already active. Being properly informed about this illness which is rampant in our region is essential for taking care of yourself and those for whom you care.
http://www.underourskin.com/
A dramatic tale of microbes, medicine and money, this eye-opening film investigates the untold story of Lyme Disease, an emerging epidemic larger than AIDS. Each year thousands go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, told that their symptoms are "all in their head." Following the stories of patients and physicians as they battle for their lives and livelihoods, the film brings into focus a haunting picture of our health care system and its inability to cope with a silent terror under our skin.
People with chronic Lyme Disease are often misdiagnosed as having chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, fibromyalgia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis, arthritis, or mental illness.
And sometimes they receive no diagnosis at all.
UNDER OUR SKIN is the recipient of numerous awards, including recognition from the Woodstock, Tribeca, Silverdocs, Houston, Sonoma, Mill Valley, and Rhode Island International Film Festivals. The film was a finalist for consideration for an Academy Award for best documentary nomination.
